Venom: Let There Be Carnage’s first trailer was released along with details on the release date and some official merch from Disney. Starring Tom Hardy and directed by Andy Serkis, it’s set to release on September 24th, 2021.
Today marked the drop of the first trailer for the sequel to 2018’s Venom, with Venom: Let There Be Carnage seeing a September release date and a special set of merch dropping officially from Disney. This may imply the Sony-Disney partnership on the Spider-Man universe might be going better than expected.
While a Spider-Man/Venom crossover seems unlikely for this installment, the continued partnership could eventually see some sort of next step to it with each party playing so nicely with each other thus far. However, until that time, we at least get a new look at what Tom Hardy’s Venom has to offer later this year.
Opening with what appears to be the greatest breakfast ever concocted, Venom and Tom Hardy continue the themes of the first iteration, with comedy and behind-the-scenes conversations between the two continuing to add a ton of charm to this otherwise adult-oriented superhero flick.
In an interview with IGN, director Andy Serkis discussed the relationship between the two: “They are now what is, in effect, the Odd Couple stage of their relationship,” Serkis says. “They’ve been together for… a year and a half, say, since the last story. And they’re figuring out how to be with each other. And it’s like living with this maniac toddler. Eddie is really struggling. He can’t concentrate. He’s trying to get on with work. And he, of course, only thinks about himself anyway, on the whole.”
Narrated by Woody Harrelson, we also get a brief glimpse at what is coming with his take on the supervillain Carnage, with the character’s transformation being teased in the trailer. “This character was so much fun to work on in design and to take [from] the comic world,” Serkis says. “It was wonderful having the opportunity to take this character that’s never been seen before on screen, as much as you do get to know him in our story and to really play with the physicality, how he moves, how he extrudes his tentacles.”
Officially releasing to theaters in the United States on September 24th, 2021, Venom: Let There Be Carnage looks to continue the fascinating look into one of the Spider-Man universe’s most interesting anti-heroes.
