A new Batman animated series, Batman: Caped Crusader is coming to HBO Max with directors, J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves alongside DC animated universe veteran, Bruce Timm reimagining the dark knight together.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Batman: Caped Crusader will be a straight-to-series for HBO Max and Cartoon Network and is being referred to as a “reimagining of the Batman mythology.” Abrams, Reeves and Timm will serve as executive producers with the show being produced by Warner Bros. Animation, Bad Robot Productions and 6th & Idaho.
“We are beyond excited to be working together to bring this character back, to tell engrossing new stories in Gotham City,” said Abrams and Reeves in a statement. “The series will be thrilling, cinematic and evocative of Batman’s noir roots while diving deeper into the psychology of these iconic characters. We cannot wait to share this new world.”
The series will be a reunion for Abrams and Reeves as they previously worked together on Felicity and 10 Cloverfield Lane. It’s another reunion for Timm who has found his way back into the animated world who helped create the DC Animated Universe with the beloved Batman: The Animated Series(1995).
“Batman: The Animated Series was a masterpiece that shaped the perception of the character for an entire generation of fans,” Warner Bros. Animation president, Sam Register said. “It is in that spirit that we are bringing together three master storytellers in J.J., Matt and Bruce – each with their own intuitive understanding and affection for the character – to create a new series that will continue in the same groundbreaking legacy.”
The show is HBO Max’s latest DC animated project with others like Harley Quinn, which initially aired its first two critically acclaimed seasons on DC Universe but moved to premiere its third season on Warner Bros’ latest streaming service, HBO Max. Batman: Caped Crusader isn’t Reeves’ only DC project as he is currently producing a Gotham PD live actions series, a spinoff from The Batman he directed and co-wrote set to release next year. Abrams meanwhile has a number of DC projects getting set which include Justice League Dark.
