We’ve known for a little while that the Super Nintendo World Donkey Kong area has been under construction but it’s no longer a rumour as Nintendo has officially confirmed it and that it will open in 2024.
The addition of the new expansion in the recently opened Mario theme park at Universal Studios Japan in Osaka, Japan is set to increase the size of the park by about 70 percent, Nintendo states. According to imagery, the new area will be accessible through a large Donkey Kong-themed door which was previously revealed by The Verge in August. The opening of the new area will launch well before Orlando’s Super Nintendo World sees the light of day for guests in 2025.
“I am very happy to be able to make the world of Donkey Kong a reality following the world of Mario,” Mario and Donkey Kong creator, Shigeru Miyamoto said in a statement.
“I am looking forward to creating a thrilling Donkey Kong experience with the amazing team at Universal. It will take some time until it is completed, but it will be a unique area for not only people who are familiar with Donkey Kong games, but for all guests.”
The upcoming addition to Super Nintendo World is set to add “a roller coaster, interactive experiences and themed merchandise and food” with guests being able to “take a walk on the wild side through the lush jungles where Donkey Kong and his friends live.“
[The Super Nintendo World Donkey Kong Expansion is a] gamechanger that combines the innovative technology and globally popular approach to theme park entertainment of Universal with the creativity of Nintendo,” Nintendo said in a statement.
The Donkey Kong expansion to Super Nintendo World is set to open at Universal Studios Japan in Osaka, Japan sometime in 2024. Hopefully, by then, fans can actually travel to Japan without the need for a two-week quarantine.
