Nintendo is offering a free retro game for those who download the next 3DS system update.

Nintendo is preparing to launch the 3DS eShop with an upcoming system update, and they’ll be giving away a free version of Excitebike in order to encourage customers to check out the store.

“For the system update, we need to have consumers voluntarily go online with their Nintendo 3DS,” said Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata. “We are planning to do some promotional activities in order to urge them to do so.”

According to Iwata, the Excitebike game will only be available for free for a limited time. The game is part of the 3DS “3D Classics” line-up of games, which is sure to feature more old Nintendo gems like Mario and Zelda. It’s basically the 3DS version of the “Virtual Console” that made the Wii so popular, and it will also feature old Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Sega Game Gear, and TurboGrafx games. These games will be playable in 3D for the first time ever.
