Nintendo Announces New IP for 3DS 3

Last night at a developer roundtable, Nintendo announced a brand new IP coming for the 3DS.

Code Name: S.T.E.A.M is a turn based strategy game with third person shooter elements. The game is being made by Intelligent Systems, the studio that makes games for the Fire Emblem and Advance Wars series.

Players will take control of Unit S.T.E.A.M, an elite unit put together by Abraham Lincoln that is tasked with fighting aliens inspired by H.P Lovecraft in a steampunk London.

Instead of following the normal formula of “move, shoot, end turn” in strategy games, Code Name: S.T.E.A.M is trying to adopt a non-linear kind of play-style. Players will be able to perform as many actions as they want in a turn, as long as they have enough steam to do so, which is indicated by a bar on the bottom of their screen.

Another goal Intelligent Systems has for Code Name: S.T.E.A.M is to give every environment and character their own personality. In the demo shown at E3, members of Unit S.T.E.A.M shown ranged from normal looking humans, to a character with a pumpkin head. The Art Director on the game, Takako Saki, stated that Silver-age American comics were an inspiration for him while coming up with the visuals of the game.

There was no release date or window given at the developer roundtable, but the game is apparently set to be shown to the public later today on Nintendo’s Treehouse stream, there might be some more information given then.
