Lucasarts may be officially dead, and its core team scattered to the four winds, but that doesn’t mean the spirit of that legacy isn’t still alive and kicking. Grim Fandango is coming to new consoles, and, for fans of the original Maniac Mansion, there’s a spiritual sequel of sorts in the works, but it needs your money. So, yes, this is a Kickstarter campaign.
Ron Gilbert and Gary Winnick, two alumni of the magical, mysterious Lucasarts adventure team, are back with a new old game called Thimbleweed Park. It’s a classic 2D point n’ click adventure in the tradition of the old SCUMM adventures like Monkey Island and Maniac Mansion that Ron Gilbert created back in the 80s when point n’ click was the hot new innovation, and typing text commands into an all-text adventure was considered the norm. The Gilbert/Winnick team is asking for US$ 375, 000 to complete the game, which is a pittance compared to the average AAA budget, and a $20 Kickstarter donation is the minimum to guarantee a digital copy of the game for Macs and PCs.
If you’re the type of gamer—older or otherwise—that is enjoying this minor renaissance in adventure games and wants to see more sitting in your hard drive, head on down to the Thimbleweed Park Kickstarter page and break out your credit card. It’s not often that one of the fathers of the point n’ click announces he’s working on a new game. We already got Tim Schafer to jump on this carousel, it shouldn’t be too hard to do the same for Ron Gilbert. AND, he’s asking for less.
