Sonic the Hedgehog is Coming to the Big Screen – and We Know When

UPDATE: Sega CEO Haruki Satomi and CEO of Paramount Pictures, Jim Ginopulos Share Their Thoughts on the Project

Sonic the Hedgehog is Coming to the Big Screen - and We Know When 1

Fans of Sonic the Hedgehog can rejoice! Everybody’s favourite blue hedgehog is coming to the big screen.

Sonic has been having a rough time of late, having been in the critical doghouse for well over a decade. But maybe it’s time for something different as Sonic will be coming to a theatre near you on November 15, 2019.

It was first announced that Sega would be bringing it’s biggest character to the big screen way back in February, 2016.

Along with a release date, a director has been announced. Tim Miller, who is known for working with Ryan Reynolds to bring the Merc with a Mouth, Deadpool, to theatres, will be executive producer, while Jeff Fowler is set to direct.

This will be Fowler’s first feature film, as he has only directed the Oscar-nominated short, Gopher Broke, a film about a gopher who is desperate for some food.

We also know that the film will use both live-action footage alongside CGI, much like the upcoming Detective Pikachu starring Ryan Reynolds in the titular role.

The timing of this announcement seems to be in response to the recent unveiling of the fact that Nintendo will be partnering up with Illumination to make a new Super Mario film, which was announced in January.

The announcement comes soon after Sonic Forces was met with a negative reception, adding to the long list of Sonic games that just did not live up to par.

Perhaps Sonic the Hedgehog will be the one to break the video game movie curse.

Sonic the Hedgehog will speed into a theatre near you November 15, 2019.

[UPDATE]: New details have emerged about the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog movie.

Sega CEO Haruki Satomi says that he is, “very honoured that our companies, SEGA and MARZA, have this incredible opportunity to partner with Paramount Pictures for this production, which will bring Sonic to the big screen for the first time. Since he was first introduced to the world 26 years ago, Sonic has continued to grow in popularity as part of our core strategy to focus on video games.”

Satomi went on to say that the movie provides Sega with “a fantastic opportunity to share Sonic with everyone and we can’t wait to reveal more to eager audiences in the future.”

CEO of Paramount Pictures, Jim Ginopulos says that the company will work closely with Sega on the film. “We are incredibly excited to work with SEGA to bring this iconic property and character to audiences around the world,” said Gianopulos. “We look forward to our partnership on this great venture.”
