Battlefield V is officially coming to consoles on October 19, 2018, and it will feature a variety of new maps, modes and most excitingly, a lack of DLC.
The game is set in WWII and the developers say that it will “deliver a WWII experience that no one has ever seen so far.” Players will be able to play as German or Allied forces and the game will take place across a variety of locations including various Scandinavian countries. DICE General manager Oskar Gabrielson, called the game a homecoming for the studio and something that they’re immensely proud of.
“Battlefield V is a return to the era that came to define the Battlefield franchise. But as nostalgic as we are about World War 2, we wanted to challenge the preconception of the era with an unexpected portrayal of this familiar setting. Our vision with Battlefield V is to let players explore new and untold sides of the conflict that shaped the modern world. The scale of each battle and level of immersion is unlike anything we’ve done before in Battlefield and players are in for an epic journey.”
The game will feature an improved multiplayer experience called Grand Operations which is a larger version of the Operations mode from Battlefield I. The new mode takes place over four fictional days, with different objectives every day. Depending on how your team fares on the previous day ties into your resources on your current day. Also returning from Battlefield 1 is the anthology story mode War Stories, and one of the missions will feature a young, female resistance fighter going up against the German forces.
As for DLC, the game is moving away from the series’ unpopular Premium Pass service, which included exclusive pay to play maps that weren’t available for consumers who only purchased the base game. In fact, the developers explicitly said that the game is not pay-to-win and that every weapon, map and upgrade is available to unlock simply by playing the game.
Some of the new gameplay mechanics include players being physically pushed by explosions, and being able to shoot while on one’s back. For support players, there’s a new item called a toolbox which allows users to use a skill called fortification. Fortification allows players to reinforce buildings, build foxholes, set up machine guns and the developers promise that it will change the way in which the game is played. Progression wise, there is a new system called The Company which creates a personal experience based on how you choose to upgrade your soldiers that brings perks and exotic ways to play.
Battlefield V will feature an event system called Tides of War, and each tide lasts several months and takes place at a certain moment in history. The first event will be the start of WWII and focus on the German’s initial push. More information about the game, including hands-on demos will be featured in two weeks at EA Play in L.A.
