PUBG Corp, the company behind the ultra-popular, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, last month attempted to sue Epic Games, the developers of Fortnite, for alleged copyright infringement — In a turn of events, the Korean based company sent a withdrawal letter, earlier this week, effectively nullifying the matter.
PUBG Corp hasn’t issued any statements regarding what exactly made them revoke the lawsuit against Epic, however, it should be noted that both PUBG and Fortnite are partially owned by Chinese juggernaut, Tencent. The news of the withdrawal comes from a new report, released earlier today from Bloomberg.
The lawsuit, which was filed back in January, was in regards to PUBG Corp claiming that Fortnite used very similar assets such as weapons, UI elements and gameplay mechanics found in PUBG.
Bluehole VP and executive producer, Chang Han Kim made an official statement, back when the story originally broke, talking about some of the reasons behind the lawsuit, “We’ve had an ongoing relationship with Epic Games throughout PUBG’s development as they are the creators of UE4, the engine we licensed for the game.” “After listening to the growing feedback from our community and reviewing the gameplay for ourselves, we are concerned that Fortnite may be replicating the experience for which PUBG is known.”
Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds is available on Xbox One, PC and mobile platforms, and is responsible for being one of the first titles that kicked off the current Battle Royale trend in multiplayer gaming.
