NieR Replicant Remake And NieR Re[in]carnation Announced

Square Enix has announced NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139… for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC via Steam, and NieR Re[in]carnation for iOS and Android.

NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139… (yes, all of that is part of the title) is an upgraded version of the third-person action RPG NieR Replicant and prequel to NieR: Automata. The version of the first NieR that we in the West got was known in Japan as NieR Gestalt, and instead of a teenage boy looking after his sister, it featured a middle-aged man taking care of his daughter. While it’s unfortunate that that version will be relegated to last-gen consoles, we’ll still be getting an improved experience over the original game thanks to upgrades made by writer/director Yoko Taro, Toylogic, and PlatinumGames’ Takahisa Taura. New content has already been confirmed, and Square Enix hopes the game will release during NieR’s 10th anniversary year (ie. before next April).

NieR Re[in]carnation will be a mobile game produced by Yosuke Saito, directed by Yoko Taro, developed by Applibot, and featuring character design by Akihiko Yoshida (CyDesignation) and concept art by Kazuma Koda. According to its website, it will be a very unique RPG that will be free with microtransactions. In spite of that, the devs have expressed that this is a labour of love, and will end up resembling more of a console game than a mobile game. We don’t know much else right now, but the game should be worth paying attention to.

NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139… for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC via Steam, and NieR Re[in]carnation for iOS and Android will be releasing some time in the future. NieR is celebrating its 10th anniversary right now (even though its technically an offshoot of the Drakengard series), and NieR: Automata shipments and digital sales have topped 4.5 million. In celebration, Xbox Game Pass for Console is adding NieR: Automata Become as Gods Edition on April 2nd. It’s a great time to be a NieR fan (as long as you don’t care about NieR Gestalt’s unique older protagonist too much), and we’ll keep an eye out for further news on the series.
