Toronto International Film Festival Looking at Other Presentation Options Amid COVID-19

Toronto International Film Festival organizers are staying committed to having some form of the event as the COVID-19 pandemic adds uncertainty in public gatherings.

According to Variety, the event didn’t follow others in cancelling an original date in September and its team is looking at virtual options for audiences. Its annual event could also bring over hundreds of worldwide films over to accessible platforms if in-person screenings are cancelled.

TIFF co-head Joana Vincente told Variety a second COVID-19 wave could change plans again if the situation worsens later in the year while “Postponing is definitely not a possibility on the table right now.”

The annual film festival is also one of the world’s biggest, gathering actors and creators for over ten days in Toronto. Audiences can also jump on a lineup of big-screen releases ahead of time and create their own watch lists for interesting movies.

Of course, the Toronto International Film Festival follows many worldwide events in changing plans ahead of time while keeping a door open for September if COVID-19 is resolved. Travel restrictions also mean guest appearances would be unlikely while their absence would draw less audiences.

Vincente also stated the experimental measures could impact the way presentations are given in the future, with digital showings as an option for the Toronto International Film Festival in 2021. This year’s event would also be a chance to recognize the film industry as many productions are on halt to keep people at home during a worldwide pandemic.
