Director Zack Snyder’s special extended cut of 2017’s Justice League will reportedly have no reshoots from the film’s cast, according to The Wrap reporter Umberto Gonzalez.
As part of The Wrap’s weekly podcast, Gonzales added that Warner Bros would instead create the extra scenes with a large amount of footage that was cut before Justice League was finalized. This would also address some of the excluded sub plots including an appearance by iconic villain Darkseid and Lex Luthor, who would build his own team with other DC supervillains. Without reshoots, the additional footage could even bring the film’s length to over three hours.
“We’ll give you money for post-production,” Gonzalez suggested to The Wrap. “For special effects, for scoring, and even ADR but no reshoots of any kind on this movie.”
The news follows an announcement made last week over stream by Snyder and HBO to bring a highly-requested Snyder Cut for Justice League. Cast members including Ben Affleck and Gal Gadot approved of a new version of the movie while fans will be waiting until 2021 to see it on HBO Max. For Zack Snyder, it’s a second attempt at improving a DCEU film after adding over half-an-hour of footage in an Ultimate Edition for Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice. This director’s cut added more motivations behind the climactic confrontation between Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent and effects to fit a new R-rating.
“There’s not going to be any reshoots of any kind with any actors,” Gonzalez said.
“It’s just additional dialogue. Here’s something that hasn’t been reported yet – (Snyder) did want to shoot and he wanted to do additional photography but HBO Max said no, that’s not happening.”
Since Justice League was released to polarizing reviews, fans grew disappointed as Snyder revealed his wishes for the story – many of which were cut by producers and resulted in many plot holes. The original cut even included plans for a black-suit Superman and more character development for each hero to establish the bonds shown in the final cut.
Snyder was also reportedly let go from directing in 2017, leading to Avengers alumni Joss Wheadon in taking over the duties. The film also saw reshoots and major changes to set the film up for a sequel. The 2021 Snyder Cut is likely using VFX and archives to bring new footage for fans while supporters of a worldwide #ReleaseTheSnyderCut movement will have their wishes come true.
