Platinum Games Announces Granblue Fantasy Spin-Off

Platinum Games Announces Granblue Fantasy Spin-Off 1

Granblue Fantasy has taken the Japanese gaming world by storm. The mobile RPG has millions of users, with constant media tie-ins and crossover events. This morning, Cygames has expanded upon their cash cow in a major way.

Aside from a new television anime, a new co-op action game has been announced. But this may be more than a simple cash-in, because the talent enlisted is turning some heads. Platinum Games, developers behind Bayonetta and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, are leading the project.

The game will have an emphasis on cooperative play, but will apparently have a fairly robust solo mode as well. It was also noted that the game’s difficulty will not be too high, which is sort of surprising for Platinum. Then again, it makes sense if this is intended for casual gamers familiar with the mobile game. The studio’s definitely bridged that gap before with stuff like Transformers: Devastation, though.

Development is apparently only ten percent complete, so we won’t be seeing it any time soon. When the game does launch, however, it will host a whole spate of playable characters. It will also feature a score by legendary composer Nobuo Uemetsu, of Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger fame.

There are no confirmed consoles, but Cygames’ Koichi Haruta did state that he purchased a new PC for the game. So it’s safe to assume that a PC release is a definite.

I’ve never really gotten into Granblue Fantasy, but the aesthetic has always enticed me. The fact that they’re enlisted both Platinum and Uematsu has really gotten me interested, considering both have worked on some of my favorite games. Seeing them converge on one title is sort of crazy. This is a title I’ll be keeping my eye on, and fans of co-op action/role-playing should probably do the same.
