Activision’s latest announcement is a new Call of Duty game, but unlike the usual CoD line, Call of Duty: Warzone will be a standalone battle royale title. And it will launch tomorrow.
Owners of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will be able to access Warzone as a separate game mode, those who don’t have Modern Warfare can pick up Warzone as a free download and join the action.
While Warzone is free for everyone, it will have a monetization structure like other battle royale games, including a battle pass to unlock new operators, cosmetic, and weapons throughout the content season.
Call of Duty: Warzone will shake up the usual battle royale format with 150-player battles, a 1v1 match system in the “gulag” to earn a respawn, and in-match rewards thanks to its contract system. It allows for squads of three and comes with two different match styles. In Battle Royale, players fight to be the last squad standing while escaping a deadly gas that will start shrinking the open play area tighter and tighter as the match wears on. In Plunder, players race to collect the most in-match Cash by looting the map, taking down enemies to loot their remains, and completing in-match Contracts.
Warzone takes place in an expansive city called Verdansk, which includes multiple named zones and over 300 points of interest.
