Marvel's Avengers Getting Spider-Man DLC Post Launch

Marvel’s Avengers is getting a bit of help from your friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man as he joins the playable roster of heroes for free next year.

According to Crystal Dynamics Associate Art Director Jeff Adams, he will also be a PlayStation exclusive character for the PS4 and PS5 release following his franchise ownership by Sony and his own Marvel’s Spider-Man game in 2018. But it’s also unclear if that version of Peter Parker will be shown alongside the Avengers, following a couple of easter eggs found in New York.

Adams also said Spider-Man will be based on Crystal Dynamics’ take, while the team took direct references from his time as an Avengers member in comics such as The Amazing Spider-Man #439 and The Avengers which featured regular guest appearances.

“This is so personal for me because I cannot remember a time when I didn’t love Marvel and its colorful characters, each more real and believable than the next,” Adams said.

“But despite my enjoyment of Captain America, Iron Man Black Widow, and the other Avengers, there was always one character I saw myself reflected in, and that was Peter Parker: The Sensational Spider-Man.”

Like the other Avengers, Spider-Man will be integrated with the same gameplay mechanics while he gets a parallel storyline structure. He will also be using web-based combat to fight enemies and hurl projectiles back at enemies, ensuring Spider-Man is “just as great on the sticks as he is on the page.”

He will also find himself in a War Zone that is separate from New York, with Adams suggesting this will a comic book panel of Spider-Man struggling to swing in an open area without skylines. Like Marvel’s Spider-Man, players can also use his numerous gadgets, web configurations and acrobatic moves with an upgrade tree.

Helping Spider-Man in his own story are Tony Stark and Hank Pym, who will also be supplying him with customizable technology and loadouts over the War Table. It’s unknown if players can change the character’s ever-growing library of suits, while Adams wrote the classic suit is based on Steve Ditko’s OG design with underarm webs.

Spider-Man’s announcement also comes close to the sights of Hawkeye, who was revealed to be another hero to join Marvel’s Avengers last week. Hawkeye/Clint Barton will also have his own bow and arrow skillsets and unique cosmetics free of charge post launch.

Marvel’s Avengers is set to launch for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Google Stadia on September 4, 2020 with a future version coming to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X in Holiday 2020.
