Successor To EVE: Online Shooter FTP Announced

A successor to EVE: Online’s free-to-play shooter Dust 514 has been announced.

The announcement came from EVE Fan Fest, Project Nova will continue to build on the foundation set by Dust: 514. Supposedly Project Nova will focus more on combat in space, via space stations and ships, as opposed to Dust 514’s planetary combat, to be more connected to the EVE experience.

A video of the first demo from the EVE Fan Fest show floor showcased a bit of what the game has to offer.

Like it’s predecessor, Project Nova will be free-to-play. No further details have been announced.

World of Darkness MMO Cancelled

World of Darkness began its development eight years ago.  It wasn’t announced until 2010, and it’s been delayed because of layoffs. Now, the title won’t see a release. Today, CCP Games cancelled World of Darkness.

The cancellation will affect 56 employees. Some will find work within the company, others are gone completely, and the rest of the Atlanta team will work on EVE Universe.

“The decision to end the World of Darkness MMO project is one of the hardest I’ve ever had to make,” said CCP CEO Hilmar Veigar Pétursson in a press release; adding the cancellation of this game puts CCP in a better position to better the Eve Universe.

The game’s world would have borrowed from two games Vampire The Masquerade: Redemption and Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines. The tabletop games depicted different vampire clans who, during their adventures try to keep the “masquerade”(where vampires stay hidden from the human world) unbroken.

Aside from World of Darkness MMO, CCP games is known for EVE Online and Dust 514.

Free-to-play titles could become a big focus for Sony in the coming generation.

In a recent interview at a media event, Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House says “We may well see free-to-play games on console be a much bigger factor…it will be a big part of the console landscape in this generation.”

Certain developers are also interested in releasing free-to-play games, including Crytek who are changing their whole plan to support a free-to-play game business model. They are also releasing a free-to-play game for the PC called Warface, which you can read more about here.

CCP, developer of EVE Online also released Dust 514 last year, a free-to-play shooter MMO, exclusively for the PlayStation 3.

The PlayStation 4 releases on November 15th in North America for $399.

Dust 514 and Eve Online: Two Sides of a Coin

Dust 514 is CCP’s latest addition to the EVE universe. It is a first person, team based shooter for the PlayStation 3 that is set in the same universe as Eve Online. But it’s not just a game using the same setting; the game itself will be directly tied in real time to Eve Online. As players and corporations in EVE fight for control of planets and resources they will need the help of mercenaries to fight the ground battles for them. This is where the Dust 514 players come in.
