Mortal Kombat X is the latest instalment from NetherRealm Studios in the hyper-violent fighting game series Mortal Kombat, created by Ed Boon and John Tobias in the early 1990s. For the first time in the series, Mortal Kombat X allows players to choose from different variations of characters. This in turn affects both strategy and playing style. An original story drops players into the world of Mortal Kombat, showcasing notable characters from the series and bringing forth new challengers.

The series spawned several spin-off games, films, and television series. It’s high levels of violence, more specifically the extremely graphic Fatality system, helped lead to the creation of the modern-day ESRB rating system.

Mortal Kombat Needs These Kharacters

Mortal Kombat Needs These Kharacters - 2015-03-13 17:41:41

Jason of Friday the 13

th

fame is officially confirmed for Mortal Kombat X. It seems like adding horror movie characters is a new tradition for Warner Brothers and NeatherRealms’ fighting series. That got us thinking, Warner has an expansive library. There are so many other characters that can make the jump too. Considering the company is 92 years old there’s a lot to choose from.  So we narrowed it down to five. It’s a nice number, and it will keep this from getting too out of hand. There are two rules for this list. The first is these characters need some kind of association with Warner Bros. The second, one character per franchise.  This way it stays realistic, but one series doesn’t run the show. So, here we go.

5) Max Rockatansky- Mad Max

His special attack is "Pocket Sand."
His special attack is “Pocket Sand.”

In a dystopian future, Australia is messed up.  Depending on where you draw your source material, there’s different ways to describe his life. But essentially he is a lone soldier who is constantly annoyed by gangs trying to take him out. Spoiler: It doesn’t usually work out for the gangs.  Max’s background of Konstant Kombat would make a nice fit in the MKU.

Plus, there could be alternate skins. You can choose between Mel Gibson, and Tom Hardy!

4) Geralt of Rivia- Witcher series

He could give Sindel some hair advice.
He could give Sindel some hair advice.

A Witcher is a monster slayer trained in Kombat and has an extensive knowledge in rituals. That’s Geralt. He happens to be a legend. He boasts an enhanced life span, immunity to disease, crazy strength, speed and endurance, the ability to heal and a really cool eye scar.  That’s not too shabby, especially if he wants to fit in with the MK Kast.

His origins actually trace back to a series of stories written by the polish writer Andrzej Sapkowsk, but WB publishes the games, so make it happen!

3) Legolas- Lord of The Rings

Adding Archer Barbie brings up the group average in "hotness."

Let’s just get this out of the way. Legolas is a certified badass.  He’s the son of the king of the Elves of Northern Mirkwood. Then, he joined the fellowship where he played a big part in that whole ring ordeal.

Aside from that, the dude is a master archer with amazing eyesight, so he could play like Green Arrow in Injustice: Gods Among Us. He’s a swift-footed killing machine that could go toe to toe with the best in the Universe.

2) The Undertaker- WWE Immortals

Shang Tsung and Undertaker share a barber.
Shang Tsung and Undertaker share a barber.

He debuted in 1990 at Survivor Series. Since then, he won one World Heavy Weight Championship, four WWE Championships, one Hardkore Championship, and six Tag Team Championships. But his most impressive feat was 21 straight wins at WrestleMania before losing to Brock Lesnar last year.

In WWE Immortals, the Dead Man is back! This time as a necromancer, because reasons. He’s one of the toughest legends in the WWE, now he can be one of the coolest characters in Mortal Kombat.

1) Ellen Degeneres-The Ellen Degeneres Show

Ellen is by far the best dancer in all the realms.
Ellen is by far the best dancer in all the realms.

Our realm needs a hero. Johnny Cage just isn’t cutting it anymore. In our darkest hour, we turn to our brightest star. Ellen Degeneres. Imagine her dance moves while she mops the floor with Scorpion. Clearly, she’s the most obvious kandidate for the next kameo in the series.

If they could add her talk show stage as a level to fight in, I’d give them bonus points.

That’s our Top Five people we want to see in the next Mortal Kombat DLC pack. I don’t think you’ll find a more rugged group of fighters more capable of ripping out someone’s spine. Did we miss someone you wanted to see? Let us know if you agree or disagree with this selection!

Shawn’s Best of E3 2014

Shawn’s Best of E3 2014 - 2014-06-19 11:24:47

Another year and another E3 has passed with everyone excited about the latest and greatest in geek entertainment. This year, in comparison to last year at least, there was a renewed focus on games instead of consoles. It was refreshing as not one time did I hear an Xbox vs Playstation argument. There are indeed a lot of games to get hyped for on all platforms and here’s my top 3.

The Order: 1886 (PS4)

I know this isn’t the newest of new IPs seeing as it was announced last year but this E3 marked the first time the media was able to get their hands on it. Likely to be a on a lot of gamer’s lists as their most anticipated game, the demo quickly lived up to the high expectations being set upon it. Set in an alternate history London, The Order focuses on an ancient order of knights sworn to protect the citizens of the world from menacing half breed human/beasts.

At first glance you can’t help but notice the steampunk inspired setting, reminiscent of Dishonored perhaps, and the sheer amount of detail the developers at Ready at Dawn have pumped into the game. From the muted browns and grays of the city to the intricate pieces of weaponry everything screams quality. Even only getting a snippet of the game was enough to win me over.

Seamless transitioning from cut scenes to gameplay is something I enjoyed as well. I couldn’t even notice a difference when the camera panned out from a cut scene and it was time for me to go shooting. It’s just another step towards keeping players fully engaged in what they’re playing. Set for a February 20, 2015 release this is one game that I’m going to have a hard time waiting for.

Tales from the Borderlands (Multiplatform, PC, Xbox 360, PS3, Current Gen not OFFICIALLY announced)

Telltale Games are the undisputed masters of turning storytelling into an engaging, interactive experience. In some ways their products are hard to pin down as games. Apart from the odd quick time event, they don’t add up to much more than choosing a responses in conversations. Regardless, they are also responsible for some of the best times I’ve had in front of my console in a long time. Whether it’s The Walking Dead series or The Wolf Among Us I’ve agonized over my choices and fully embraced the signature Telltale experience.

This year we got our first real look at Tales from the Borderlands and not only does it still master that style we already know and love, it throws in some new twists. As always, they have extremely well fleshed out characters, but now they have that signature Borderlands attitude. The two main playable characters are Rhys, a Hyperion employee and Fiona, a Pandoran grifter. Essentially the game involves the two of them telling their sides of the same story and you as the player get to decide exactly how those tales play out. It’s like Akira Kurosawa went to Pandora and filmed Rashoman.

Everything about the game is unabashedly Borderlands inspired, from the art, to the humour, and everything in between. One of the best parts of the demo was calling down a loader bot to fight a battle for you while playing as Rhys. It was more than just a quick time event too, so it goes a long way in showing how Telltale is evolving their mechanics. Throw in the top notch casting with actors such as Sam Witwer and Patrick Warburton and this game has all the right parts to be a great experience.

Mortal Kombat X (Multiplatform PC, PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360)

Alright, to be fair the choices here are limited but there’s no denying that Mortal Kombat X was all anyone could talk about when it came to fighting games. Sure Ultra Street Fighter 4 had some buzz and season two of the resurrected Killer Instinct turned some heads but Mortal Kombat buzzed heads off bodies and that takes the cake.

A couple of familiar characters have been revealed; Scorpion and Sub-Zero, as well as a smattering of new ones. Running with the theme ‘The Next Generation of Mortal Kombat,’ we’re introduced to Cassie Cage, the daughter of Sonya Blade and Johnny Cage, and there’s now D’Vorah, Ferra/Tor and Kotal Kahn. Quite obviously there are a lot more characters to come and I’m interested to see just how many new generation fighters there are as Mortal Kombat tries to give itself a refresh.

No MK game would be complete without over the top violence and gory fatalities. Without a doubt that requirement can be checked off the list and then some. The new generation of consoles are both a blessing and a curse as shattering bones and gaping wounds look more painful than ever. I questioned my humanity a bit when I saw Scorpion rip out Sub-Zero’s beating heart before slicing his face off and all I felt was a sick blend of disgust and elation. Finish that off with the sound of Sub-Zero choking on his own tongue and you’ve got a grade-A fatality.

Sadly, there’s still a long time to wait for the next blood soaked installment of Mortal Kombat as the release date is set as sometime in 2015. I look forward to a lot more characters and fatalities being unveiled over the next months to help tide me over.

New Mortal Kombat Game Finally Announced

New Mortal Kombat Game Finally Announced - 2014-06-02 09:42:14

After  months of teasing, hinting, and speculation, Ed Boon has finally announced that NetherRelm Studios next game is Mortal Kombat X.

The trailer shows the classic match of Sub-Zero and Scorpion beating the living daylights out of each other.

It looks like the X-ray attacks and counters from the last Mortal Kombat game will return, and weapons may make an appearance again. It also looks like players might be able to interact with certain items in the environment on the stage much like NetherRelm’s last game Injustice: Gods Among Us.

Nothing else has been revealed other than the trailer, and a 2015 release window, but EVO 2014 is just around the corner so there could be another reveal there, much like Ed Boon did with Injustice in 2012.
