Released in 2010, Limbo is a puzzle-platform game that first released on Xbox Live Arcade. The game is a 2D sidescroller which incorporates a physics system for environmental objects and the player’s character. Players control an unnamed boy through a series of dangerous environments and traps. Failure to complete puzzles often result in a gruesome death for the game’s protagonist. Playdead called this style of gameplay, “trial and death”. Matching its dark style, the game also features a unique art style, presenting the game in black-and-white tones.  Using different types of lighting, Limbo creates an eerie atmosphere similar to horror titles. During the year of its release, Playdead’s debut title became the third-highest selling game on the Xbox Live Arcade, generating around $7.5 million in revenue. Limbo was later ported to nearly every device available, including PlayStation 3, PC, PlayStation Vita, Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

The 2016 title Inside, Playdead’s second game is also a puzzle-platformer, following their previous title thematically and visually. Players control an unnamed red-shirted boy through surreal, monochromatic 2.5D platform environments, using colour to highlight parts of the level. Inside was initially developed using the same engine the team used for Limbo before switching to the Unity engine to simplify its development. Inside released on Xbox One before releasing on PC and finally on PlayStation 4, but received universal acclaim since releasing last year, being considered a worthy successor to Limbo.

The Limbo/Inside Double Pack will be available on Sept. 12, 2017 in North America and Sept. 15, 2017 in Europe.
