Godzilla Minus Zero Director Is “Fifty-Fifty” On Whether He Wants To Do a Third Film
While Godzilla Minus Zero brings the King of the Monsters face-to-face with their greatest enemy, King Ghidorah, this might be the last we see of the current incarnation. Director and writer Takashi Yamazaki is, apparently, “fifty-fifty” on whether he’d come back for a third film if given the chance.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Yamazaki explains his reasoning for the uncertainty, saying,
“I’m quite satisfied and happy with the current ending we have. It entrusts the interpretation to the audience in terms of how they want to receive it and what they want to walk out of theaters with. That being said, if Godzilla Minus Zero is my last Godzilla film, that would make me a bit sad. I do have other films lined up, starting with Grandgear and a few others, but at some point in my career, I would love to revisit Godzilla and see how we can expand this world.”
Without spoiling anything, the ending of Godzilla Minus Zero does leave things open-ended enough that the story could go further, and there’s certainly no shortage of other monsters to pit as a villain, from the likes of Destroyah to Gigan. While Minus Zero does introduce a handful of new characters, it primarily carries on the story of three major characters from Godzilla Minus One: Koichi Shikishima, Noriko, Oishi, and Kenji Noda.
But the performance of Minus Zero could, of course, also be a factor. The film is tracking for a big opening weekend of $25-35 million, which would already surpass the budget that’s reported as roughly $15 million.
It’s also been a huge hit with critics so far, currently sitting at 91 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Our own Shakyl Lambert awarded the film a whopping 10/10 in our review, saying, “Living up to the previous film was already a tough enough task. Minus Zero manages to not only be as masterful as its predecessor; it’s one of the best films I’ve seen this year, and one of the best Godzilla films I’ve ever seen. Yamazaki leaves things open enough for a potential third film, but as it stands, he’s already crafted one of the all-time great duologies. “
Yamazaki’s next film, Grandgear, was announced by Sony Pictures in 2024, and will be the director’s first major Hollywood studio movie, as well as his first English-language film. It’s a live-action sci-fi mecha movie produced by Bad Robot, starring Sam Nivola (The White Lotus Season 3), Nico Parker (The Last of Us), and Paul Giamatti (Cinderella Man).
Godzilla Minus Zero hits theaters today, November 6.
