There were plenty of negatives that came out of the pandemic, but one silver lining was how it forced us to reconnect with friends and family. Without the convenience of heading out to movies, restaurants, or bars, we had to find new ways to socialize with our favourite people.

For many, the perfect solution was online gaming in Canada, whether through console titles like Call of Duty or playing poker with friends. Thankfully, the popularity of online gaming has endured beyond the pandemic, leaving us with a thriving community that caters to all tastes.

If you missed out on the 2020 online multiplayer hype and are wondering how to get in on the action, fear not! We’ve got you covered with a list of five great multiplayer games that you can play with your friends this weekend. Read on to find out what they are…

Call of Duty: Warzone

Call of Duty released their Battle Royale game Warzone on March 10 2020 which was, all things considered, the most perfect timing. Not only was the game superb to play, but its release came just a week or so before almost everyone on the planet was asked to stay at home.

The result was spectacular, within the first day of release the game had been downloaded 6 million times. Three days later the official Twitter account announced that they had crossed the 15 million mark of active players and, just a month after its release, the game had been downloaded 50 million times.

Unfortunately, nothing will recapture the buzz of the spring 2020 Warzone era, but if you’re looking for a fun game to play with friends, the latest incarnation of the title is well worth a try.

Warzone 5, as it’s known, has been streamlined to make it more accessible for casual players, allowing for easier drop-in, drop-out gameplay compared to previous versions.

(The original Warzone was a thing of beauty.)

2) Card games

There’s nothing better than getting together with your buddies on a Friday night and playing cards. Unfortunately, it’s not always easy to make time for evenings like that with work and family commitments to balance.

Thankfully, if you’re looking for a great way to unwind with friends, playing cards online can be a perfect option. With busy schedules and family commitments, organizing in-person game nights isn’t always easy. Fortunately, many top eCheck casinos offer multiplayer games that let you recreate that Friday night fun, no matter where you are. These platforms make it easy to deposit and jump into the action. Simply find a provider that works for everyone, set your limits, and get your headphones ready for some fun, stress-free gaming and chatting with friends.

3) Crusader Kings III

It doesn’t matter whether you’re male or female, 18 or 81, we all have a deep affection somewhere in our hearts for medieval strategy games. Whether that be cult classic titles like Medieval Total Warfare or Age of Empires, something about these types of games just tends to get people going.

The best one available to play right now with your friends is Crusader Kings III, which was initially released in 2020 but has had plenty of content updates since then to keep it fresh and relevant. You and up to 12 friends can play at any one time too, making it an ideal game for a virtual gaming evening.

(Just a friendly warning, this game will monopolize your time.)

4) Board Games

The rate of technological advancement that we’re currently going through is putting at risk some of the more quaint and traditional hobbies and pastimes that we used to enjoy, like playing board games.

Fortunately, Board Game Arena has combined the two to bring you a huge library of free-to-play board games online. Included in the library are old-school classics like Yahtzee and Rummy, but also much more modern titles like Terraforming Mars and Ark Nova.

5) Gang Beasts

Our final entry on this list is the light-hearted and insanely fun to-play Gang Beasts. Described as a ‘melee brawler’, the title sees you and your friends set up in gangs and fight one another across precarious urban landscapes.

The beauty of the game is the ragdoll physics that allows for a laugh-a-minute experience that is augmented with the right group of friends. If you’re looking for a comparison, think Fall Guys crossed with Tekken.

(Gang Beasts is the dictionary definition of fun.)
