Dragon Quest III HD-2D Guide: How to get the Auroral Helm and Sword of Kings

Dragon Quest III invites players to dive deep into Alefgard’s secrets, where the legendary Sword of Kings and Ortega’s upgraded Auroral Helm await those daring enough to uncover them.

One of the more interesting tropes found in both the original and 2D-HD remake of Dragon Quest III is offering inquisitive players the chance to reforge the legendary Sword of Kings, a feature that also appears in later instalments of the long-running series.

New for Dragon Quest III HD-2D, however, is the inclusion of the Auroral Helm, a fully upgraded version of Ortega’s helm, which the player first acquires during their visit to Mur. For players wanting to upgrade both Ortega’s helm and acquire the reforged Sword of Kings, this guide has you covered.

The best time to tackle this is once the player reaches Alefgard, the second “world of ruin”-style map in the game. To start with the Sword of Kings, the player must first travel to Damdara, located at the bottom-left or southwestern point of Alefgard.

Once in Damdara, the player must head to the bottom right area of the town, near the horse stable, to find a hidden cache of Orichalcum, the material needed to mend the broken Sword of Kings. It’s recommended to keep a thief in your party, as they can use the “Nose for Treasure” and “Snoop” abilities to pinpoint the precise location of any hidden or missed collectables, making it easier to spot the required key item before proceeding with the sword itself.

Now, on to the broken Sword of Kings. For this key Dragon Quest III item, players should make their way to Cantlin, located toward the bottom middle section or southeastern area of Alefgard, just above the coast. Once in Cantlin, walk to the left of the town, just below the inn, where a two-story house can be found. Proceed to the second floor and speak to the scientist on the left side of the room by the bookcase; he will mention working on a Golem to protect the town from monsters.

To the right of the scientist, the player should find the broken Sword of Kings on the table. If, for any reason, the sword is not there, try returning after the fight with Baramos.

In previous releases of Dragon Quest III, simply possessing both the broken sword and Orichalcum was enough to forge the sword by selling the latter to the blacksmith in Kol. In Dragon Quest III HD-2D, however, the player must first zoom back to Jipang and enter the house of the blacksmith who fled the Japan-inspired island shortly after the player defeats Orochi in the early game. Inside the now-abandoned blacksmith’s abode, the player will find his trusty hammer, the final key item needed to forge the Sword of Kings.

With everything acquired, simply zoom to Kol, located in the top-right or northeastern area of Alefgard, proceed to the shop, and head upstairs to the blacksmith. A short cutscene will play, and the player will be rewarded with the mended Sword of Kings for their efforts.

To complete the set (outside of the Auroral armour, which can be found in a chest in Rubiss Tower), the Auroral Helm can be obtained by heading back to the early-game town of Reeve and talking to the old man who gives you the Wrecking Ball during the opening hours of the game. If the player returns to the old man after their voyage into Alefgard (and perhaps after the fight with Baramos), he should give the player a second Wrecking Ball key item, which is needed to upgrade Ortega’s helmet into the Auroral Helm.

With the second Wrecking Ball in hand, head to Lanson, another early-game location, and proceed to the trial area, which the player can enter with only a single character. Make it to the deepest sanctum of the challenge dungeon and follow the video attached below to find the secret spot where the player can use the Wrecking Ball to acquire a piece of Zenithium ore, the final item needed to upgrade Ortega’s helm.

Finally, head to the Shrine of the Dwarf, located on the first map in the northern snowy area. Talk to the titular dwarf, and a short cutscene will play, presenting the player with the Auroral Helm.
