The Boys is a show filled with an array of characters, each bringing their own unique take on the superpowered universe. Now, with Season 4, the world expands even further, bringing with it new Supers and the return of some of the most iconic characters we have come to know and love over the years.
Ahead of this latest season of The Boys, Prime Video was kind enough to give us a chance to speak with Colby Minifie, known for her portrayal of Ashley, along with Valorie Curry, who plays Firecracker, and Susan Heyward, who brings Sister Sage to life in this latest season. With such a legacy surrounding the show up to this point, we wasted no time in diving into the excitement of the latest season and what fans can expect when they jump into Season 4 of The Boys later this month.

How does it feel for all of you to be part of The Boys, a series that has become so beloved?
Colby Minifie: It’s totally nuts! You know, you make something, you have no idea how it’s going to be received. You don’t know if anybody’s going to watch it. You don’t know if you’re going to get fired, if they’re going to have a season two if they’re going to have a season three, let alone five. It’s pretty magical. You know, we won the actor’s jackpot, I think.
Valorie Curry: Yeah. It’s exciting. It’s exciting to know that. I mean, Colby nailed it. You never know how something is going to land. You put your whole heart and soul into everything that you do, ideally. And it’s amazing when you know that it’s going to be a part of a story that’s so well told. The craftsmanship is incredible in this show. And then also, you know, it’s going to be seen. There’s an audience. It’s going to be perceived one way or another. And some of us might be dreading that—just me—I don’t know, it’s great.
Susan Heyward: Stamp on all of that.
What can you tell us about your characters going into The Boys Season 4?
Susan Heyward: Going into the season, Tony put a story out that said fresh blood, maybe, with the new characters. So I love there’s a sense of anticipation, I think, from the audience and from us. I think with Sage, she found a very safe existence where she’s not anticipating anything. She dipped her toe into the whole fame thing with Teenage Kicks. And I think she brings a different point of view on The Seven because it’s lifted up as this goal, this amazing goal for anybody. And I don’t think Sage feels the same way. So it’s nice to have a different point of view.
Colby Minifie: Ashley is, once again, in Homelander’s debt. Homelander came and saved her life in the season finale of Gen V, the spinoff. So there’s like a whole other level of gratitude and groveling that Ashley has to do for Homelander, as always. And then her position is threatened with the introduction of this “fresh blood.”
Valorie Curry: And Firecracker is the unlikeliest candidate in many ways for The Seven. She is not an insider. She’s very much an outsider. That is what she is used to. That is what her brand is based on. And her fan base as well, as the outsider. And, it’s it’s the dream. Or she probably never even dared to dream. This is the fantasy of being, like, discovered at the mall. And how she will cope with that? We’ll see.

What was your favourite or most challenging scene from this latest season?
Colby Minifie: I would say my biggest challenge is also my favourite scene. I don’t want to give anything away, but we see a new side of Ashley we’ve never seen before. And there was a lot of discussion that had to happen before we filmed that scene.
There was a lot of…I had more fittings for the costume in that scene than I’ve had for any other of the amazing costumes that I have in this show designed by Michael Ground. It was the hardest and my favourite thing to do. So I can’t give anything else away, though. You’ll you’ll know it when you see it.
Valorie Curry: Yeah. Mine was also in episode six. It’s a big episode. That was a big challenge in terms of how to tell a really important story point, how to ground it, and also how to pull it off. I also had more costume fittings for that than I ever would have expected.
The super suit team built, I think they needed a patent for what they built to make that scene happen! But it’s also my favourite of the season. Having seen it, I think it played really surprisingly vulnerably and with sincerity, which just makes it that much weirder.
Susan Heyward: Sage sets a lot of traps for people without giving away too much. I can say that. So, I think keeping track, for her, of what was genuine and what was a setup so that even if the audience was uncertain about how to read her, I needed to be certain of who she was when she was pretending and when she wasn’t. I’ve emailed Kripke and been like, “Yo, she means it! Okay, cool. Yeah. Got you.”
Thank you so much for all your time.
The Boys Season 4 premieres on Prime Video on June 13, 2024.
