Netflix's Fixed Cast: "You Knew You Were in Safe Hands" With Animation Legend Genndy Tartakovsky

There is no question that Genndy Tartakovsky is a majorly influential figure in the world of animation, with his films and TV shows touching millions of people over generations. From Dexter’s Laboratory to Primal, his work remains beloved to this day, with each new entry in his filmography only adding to his reputation.

Now on Netflix, Tartakovsky is releasing one of his most risqué entries yet — a film that has been in the works for years. First conceived in 2009 and facing a rocky release due to issues with Warner Bros. Pictures, Fixed tells the story of Bull, an average, all-around good dog who discovers he is going to be neutered in the morning and has 24 hours to enjoy one last adventure intact with his pack of friends.

With the film debuting on Netflix on Aug. 13, we had the chance to talk to the cast — including Adam Devine, Beck Bennett and River Gallo, who play Bull, Rocco and Frankie, respectively. Through our chat, the cast detailed the love they have for the film, the excitement they felt working with Tartakovsky on this project, and their experiences voice acting and bringing the movie to life.

Genndy Tartakovsky is a legend in the world of animation. What was it like to work with him on Fixed on Netflix?

Adam Devine: You know, it was incredible. I mean, he was the reason. As soon as I found out that he was the director of this, you knew you were in safe hands because he’s so good. He’s only ever done great things. Everything that he touches is gold. And so this is the type of pitch that in lesser hands, it could have been very bad and hacky and not as much heart and just for shock value. But you knew, with him, it was going to have heart. It was going to look great. It was going to be incredibly funny. And I think he nailed it on all fronts.

Beck Bennett: Yeah. And I would say for me, I was so excited to work with him. He’s done incredible stuff. So there was a part of me that was nervous that he might be so incredibly specific and not be happy with what I was giving him, and push me to try to find it. But he was just so supportive and fun to work with and easy to work with. It was just a breeze. It was so, so fun.

River Gallo: Yeah, I grew up on Dexter’s Laboratory, so to work with him was like, “What the fuck? Me?!”

What drew you to the Fixed, and how did you get involved in this project?

Beck Bennett: For me, it was like, just reading when I came in, it was Genndy and the cast that I was like, yes, 100%. I will be a part of this. I’m so excited.

Adam Devine: Yeah, I was super early on in the process, and I knew that Genndy was involved, and Sony Animation, and they make really great stuff. And then once I read the script, I just knew that it was going to be a hit. I just knew that this is—it was so funny. And then, now, seeing the actual finished product, it was better than even the script was. So I’m super happy that I got involved.

River Gallo: Yeah, for me, it was my first time doing any voiceover work and seeing these guys’ names on it. I was like, “Hell yeah!” But also, it was just reading the script. It. He was able to create something that had so many layers on top of just being bonkers. I just love anything that pushes boundaries.

Can you tell us a bit about your characters in Fixed? And were you able to bring any of yourself to the roles?

Beck Bennett: Yeah, I play Sterling, an obnoxious rich asshole. So yeah, I was bringing my A-game. I love playing obnoxious, awful people. They’re very uninhibited. I was exposed to the country club culture growing up, and he is very much a country club member. So, I brought a lot of that to it.

Adam Devine: Yeah, I feel like I did. I was trying to do another voice, just like what I imagined a dog to be like, a big old dog with big old swinging nuts. And Genndy was like, “No, no, no, we cast you for your voice. You are this dog.” And I think The Hollywood Reporter said that I was perfectly cast as a dog that wants to hump everything, so I’m living that life.

Beck Bennett: This is really putting everything into focus for Adam.

River Gallo: I play Frankie the intersex Doberman that is a madam of a dog whorehouse. And yeah, I tried to channel my inner sexually liberated, radical person that is close to who I am. I loved their confidence and how they just knew who they fucking are and weren’t afraid to show it.

You’ve all worked in live action and now animation with Fixed. How was this process different, and what can you tell people who are aspiring to do this kind of work?

Adam Devine: Well, what I love about animation is, in live action, you get a few takes and hopefully you nail it because the day moves quick and you’ve got to move on, and sometimes it moves a little faster than you want it to. And you’re like, “I didn’t get to try all the things I wanted to try.”

But in animation, you can try a million different ways, and you can go “Hang on real quick,” because you don’t need to turn around to get someone else’s coverage. In that moment, you could go, “I actually want to try it like this,” or “I want to give it more heart,” or “I want to improv a little,” and you’re able to do that. So that’s what I love about it.

Beck Bennett: Yeah. And I love just being able to be as fun and silly as possible. You’re not limited by the way you look. You can be anything. So, your voice can be anything, and you can really just allow yourself to go there and have fun.

River Gallo: Yeah. And I love the fact that animation just lets you go into worlds. Like, I don’t think I’m gonna play a dog in a live-action thing, but it’s cool to be. Yeah.

Beck Bennett: I mean…

Adam Devine: You never know.

River Gallo: Hey, yeah, you could.

Adam Devine: It’s coming. We’re all going to be dogs.

Awesome. Thank you all for your time.

All: Thank you.
