"I Can't Say Nothing," Assassin's Creed Black Flag Actor Claims Legal Action Was Threatened For Remake Remarks

A cheeky comment previously made by Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag lead, Matt Ryan, may have gotten him into trouble for teasing a remake of the open world title.

Last month, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag actor Matt Ryan, who provided his talents to the lead role of Edward Kenway, was caught saying fans may have to beat Black Flag once again. This small statement caught fire on the internet, and fans were immediately excited about the prospect of re-experiencing the best-received Assassin’s Creed title. Those comments may have gotten him into trouble.

Forum sites like Reddit had fans discussing a remake, with many seemingly happy that the actor would be returning to the role (fans filled in the blanks, assuming he would automatically be recast). In a small video at a convention signing, Matt Ryan was caught saying, “Have you beat the game?… well, you may have to beat it again,” while on camera during the autograph signing. This statement, alongside Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot saying that players should “be excited about some remakes” back in 2024, made fans believe a Black Flag remake was all but assured.

History has repeated itself. Today, another video with the same actor has surfaced at an autograph signing, where the lead actor for Edward Kenway, Matt Ryan, has answered another question regarding a potential Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag remake. But this time it was not with the exuberance he initially showed when previously warning fans a second playthrough might be warranted. On X (formerly Twitter), user TheHiddenOneAC posted another small form video of Matt Ryan signing autographs for fans, where he asks about a remake. The post can be seen below.

In the video, Ryan is seen responding, “I don’t know, mate. I don’t know,” to another question regarding a potential Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag remake. He continued with “Thing is, is that, when that [first recording] happened, someone was doing this,” pointing at the camera, adding “and I was being very free and open, but I didn’t know that they actually were recording me on their phone, and then the company threatened to sue me.” He then concluded with, “Yeah, so, I say nothing.”

Although fans are still hopeful about a Black Flag remake, it appears Ubisoft has started making sure all leaks are plugged before any official announcements.
