Following the release of the third film, Avatar: Fire and Ash, fans of the franchise were left wondering if Avatar 4 and 5 would happen, and at least one producer thinks so.
Director James Cameron made headlines last Fall 2025, when he suggested in an interview that Avatar 4 and 5, the purported continuations of the billion-dollar Avatar franchise, weren’t written in stone. He then added fuel to the proverbial fire in December 2025, when he suggested in another interview with EW that he would hold a press conference and tell the world what he would have done with Avatar 4 and 5, or write novels (although there’s no money in it) if he didn’t get the chance to make the sequel movies.

With the box office success the original trilogy of films made, fans would suspect a fourth and fifth film would be a no-brainer, but Cameron has explained in these interviews that the cost of VFX has gone up “an enormous amount,” and the choice would be left on the factor of whether money could be made (profit margin-wise) after the costs. Although there are doubts, a producer of the films is convinced the sequels are happening.
In an interview with Inverse, Avatar: Fire & Ash producer Rae Sanchini said that they’re working with “more generally available technology” over the previous trilogy’s system. Sanchini explained that the transition to a more “accessible platform” will streamline production time, considering that a lot of the previous Lightstorm Entertainment system was built by Cameron’s production team and visual effects artists at Wēta Digital, making production training a cost nightmare. While all of that is being ironed out, Sanchini is convinced production on the next films is “full speed ahead.”

While the films have yet to receive an official confirmation, Sanchini says, “We have the scripts, they’re brilliant,” adding, “As far as I’m concerned, we’re heading forward.” While Cameron may not be fully convinced the films will happen yet, at least one producer is.
