On Wednesday, Game Science, the developers behind Black Myth: Wukong have deployed a free update that brings a challenge mode for fans to test their mettle.
Black Myth: Wukong‘s update 1.0.12.16581 (what Game Science calls it) adds a new boss rush mode called “Challenge,” which can be found at any Keeper’s Shrine after beating the game once. Two types of challenge are available: Return of Rivals and Gauntlet of Legends, and The Destined One can select either option at the player’s convenience once the main campaign has been beaten.

Firstly, Black Myth: Wukong‘s Return of Rivals Challenge allows players to square off against any of The Destined One’s bigger enemies at any of the Keeper’s Shrines. This will allow players to challenge former boss fights by selection, upping the difficulty of each encounter by using three difficulty options. Interestingly, if a player hasn’t fought a certain optional boss during the storyline, they will not be made available in the Return of Rivals.
The second Challenge unleashed by Game Science, is called the Gauntlet of Legends, and allows The Destined One to face all the foes vanquished during the main storyline in a row, just like Team Ico’s Shadow of the Colossus‘ ‘Boss Rush Mode’, after the credits roll. Players can face off against multiple opponents in succession, using customized curses to tailor the difficulty. Some of the curses allow enemies to change their attack patterns and use new strategies to defeat The Destined One. By completing any ‘Challenge,’ Black Myth: Wukong gives players nifty rewards like new equipment, weapons and medicine as rewards, and possible rewards include weapons like the “Qing Mallet” and medicine like “Glimmering Scale Pellets” and its formula.

Aside from the Challenge, Black Myth: Wukong has also brought A Journeyer’s Chart for easier navigation of the biomes introduced in the main storyline. Each time The Destined One enters a new area, these charts can be bought from the Keeper’s Shrine, and they detail the surrounding landscape (like a map). This can be unlocked after first meeting the Keeper in the main story. Lastly, four special Armor pieces have been crafted to celebrate the upcoming Chinese New Year. Game Science is bestowing the Armor Set of Opulence onto players, and this new set can be retrieved at any time directly through “Trailblazer’s Gift” at any Keeper’s Shrine.
Black Myth: Wukong‘s entire list of patch notes can be found on the official update blog post, for those interested in more details surrounding the free update.
