Borderlands 4 Is Coming Sooner Than You Think—And Leaving Pandora Behind

Gearbox Studios and the team behind Borderlands have revealed they will be releasing Borderlands 4 earlier in September than previously reported.

Gearbox Studios has made a very Borderlands-esque announcement today on its X (formerly Twitter) platform in regards to the Borderlands 4 release date. The release date is being moved forward by eleven days (from September 23 to September 12) and could potentially be in connection with Take-Two’s massive GTA6 release, which is scheduled to land within that timespan. Considering Take-Two Interactive owns both Rockstar Games and Gearbox Studios, it’s possible they don’t want to step on themselves with big releases. The post can be seen below courtesy of Gearbox.

Fans were in for a change of scenery with Borderlands 4’s latest announcement, confirming the game will not be set on the familiar planet of Pandora. Instead, Vault Hunters will travel to a new world called Kairos. It remains unclear whether characters from previous titles will make cameo appearances. (Borderlands 2 allowed players to interact with — and even accept quests from — the original cast.)

In an earlier update, developers wrote: “After careful consideration — along with a lot of meetings, playtesting and incredible development work — we have made the monumental decision to move up the launch date of Borderlands 4 to Sept. 12.” The post added, “Our team has thrown themselves headfirst into making the greatest Borderlands yet — both for new and returning Vault Hunters.”

Borderlands 4 Will Now Launch Earlier In September, Might Be In Avoidance Of Gta6

It’s also very possible Borderlands 4 and the team at Gearbox Studios are attempting to avoid Bungie’s Marathon release, which landed on the same day, September 23. Whether or not Borderlands 4 is avoiding other launches remains a mystery—Gearbox won’t say they’re avoiding anything— but other publishers have also moved their release dates out of the supposed window of GTA6‘s forecasted launch date. According to The Game Business, EA Boss Strauss Zelnick said, “Some things happening in the year that may cause us to think differently about our launch timing” regarding the new Battlefield that’s in the works.

Borderlands 4 will launch on September 12, and a Sony PlayStation State of Play focusing on the game is scheduled for tomorrow at 5:00 p.m. EST.
