Capcom’s cult-classic RPG Breath of Fire IV has been resurrected on PC, playable once again 25 years after its release.
First released on the original PlayStation in 2000, Breath of Fire IV has been brought back thanks to GOG.com’s Preservation Program. Exactly as it sounds, Gog seeks to bring back older classics that aren’t playable on any modern consoles — hoping to preserve games so they aren’t lost to time.

Games to be brought back are voted on by GOG users, and Breath of Fire IV received over 23,000 votes. It should be noted this is a straightforward port that mostly just brings the visuals and compatibility up to modern standards. The port costs $9.99, and here’s a few of fixes,
- Full compatibility with Windows 10 and Windows 11
- Both 2 localizations of the game included (English and Japanese)
- Improved DirectX game renderer
- New rendering options (Windowed Mode, Vertical Synchronization Control, Gamma Correction, Integer Scaling, Anti-Aliasing, and more)
- Improved audio engine (restored missing environmental sounds and audio configuration)
- Improved keyboard and mouse support
- Improved Warehouse and Crane minigames
- Improved F9 exit screen
- Issue-free battle and combo system (all crashes have been fixed)
- Issue-free cutscene scripting
- Issue-free task switching
- Full support for modern controllers
While the fourth game in the series, most of the Breath of Fire titles can be played on their own. The story follows a young man named Ryu, who can turn into a dragon, and bands together with an eclectic cast of other warriors to defeat the Fou Empire.
Breath of Fire IV isn’t the only title added today, however. The Preservation Program has added a handful of other games, most notably a few Ultima titles. Here’s everything else added today.
● Ultima Underworld 1+2
● Ultima 9: Ascension
● Worlds of Ultima : The Savage Empire
● Ultima Worlds of Adventure 2: Martian Dreams
● Worms: Armageddon
● Robin Hood: The Legend of Sherwood
● Realms of the Haunting
● Tex Murphy: Under a Killing Moon
● Stonekeep
