It seems there’s a bit of a catch with the Nintendo Switch 2 Enhanced Edition games—specifically with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The game’s paid DLC won’t be included with the Switch 2 version and must be purchased separately.
That may not have been obvious after the Switch 2 presentation, but Nintendo confirmed the detail in a statement to IGN, saying: “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition does not include The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Expansion Pass DLC. That DLC is available as a separate purchase.”
The Expansion Pass includes The Master Trials and The Champion’s Ballad, and currently costs $20 on the Nintendo eShop. While this isn’t entirely surprising—Nintendo has historically sold DLC separately—it’s notable given that Breath of the Wild is now an eight-year-old title. Most other publishers would likely bundle the DLC at this stage, especially with the additional charge already in place for the Switch 2 version.
The Enhanced Edition upgrade for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild includes improved resolution and framerate, HD support, and compatibility with the Zelda Notes feature on the Nintendo Switch Online mobile app. If you already own the Switch 1 version of Breath of the Wild, the upgrade pack can be purchased for $10. If you’ve already purchased the Expansion Pass DLC, it should carry over to the Switch 2 version, as long as you’re using the same Nintendo account.
Alternatively, you can purchase the Switch 2 version of the game—available both digitally and physically—for $69.99.
There are currently six Nintendo Switch 2 Enhanced Edition games announced — Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Mario Party Jamboree, Metroid Prime 4, and Pokemon Legends Z-A.
Nintendo Switch 2 launches on June 5, 2025.
