After months of silence surrounding Bungie’s next first-person shooter, Marathon has finally re-emerged on social media, teasing what’s to come.
Since the big reveal in 2023, Bungie has remained relatively quiet about anything related to their extraction shooter experience reboot. The PvP FPS title has stepped out of the shadows with the help of Game Director Joe Ziegler, who cryptically teased that the title is still in development.
After numerous layoffs at the studio following the launch of Destiny 2: The Final Shape, and internal turmoil that led remaining employees to demand CEO Pete Parsons’ resignation, Marathon is seemingly still full speed ahead. In case you missed it, the latest video Bungie released for Marathon—which features Joe Ziegler accepting the role of director last year—can be seen below, and until today had been the most recent development on Bungie’s next title.
After many months following the directorial shift—and confirmation the game still exists—Game Director Joe Ziegler has broken the silence to reveal cryptic messaging that might mean something or might not. The post was shared on the official Marathon X (formerly Twitter) account and can be seen below.
While the imagery might not mean much, it does bear a resemblance to the maps featured in Bungie’s original 1994 release. On a still-active spoiler guide, maps and walkthroughs for the original can be found. With the written walkthroughs, the map system for each level is faithfully reproduced on marathon.bungie.org.
The image released today contains cryptic messaging with phrases such as “whispers of Tau Ceti,” “screams of the silenced,” and “evidence of their crimes” featured prominently, so it’s possible the resemblance to former maps from 1994 is purely coincidental.
Either way, today’s messaging confirms Marathon is still in development, if nothing else.
