A Death Stranding Anime is Happening According to Hideo Kojima

In a new interview, Hideo Kojima has confirmed that Death Stranding will expand beyond film and video games, and the latest Kojima Production will also land in anime.

The cat’s out of the bag: Hideo Kojima has officially confirmed that Death Stranding will be heading to anime. In a new interview from Vogue Japan, Kojima discussed his all-encompassing vision for the franchise as a whole, including his future vision, taking down boundaries between movies and video games. In the interview (loosely Google Translated), Kojima also discussed his desire to put a true film version (that can only be perceived in cinema) of Death Stranding on the silver screen.

After re-confirming the A24 Death Stranding film production, Kojima explained “When it comes to film adaptations of games, there have been recent films like The Last of Us that keep the plot of the original intact, and films like The Super Mario Bros. Movie that are more like a service to game fans,” adding that his vision is to pursue “expression” as a film. Kojima says his ultimate goal is to “make Death Stranding in a way that can only be done as a film.” Right after, he confirmed that an anime project with the IP is in the works.

Kojima then further prophesied that “the boundary between games and movies will disappear” in the future, and that’s what Kojima Productions and the Death Stranding IP are trying to accomplish. If Kojima Productions was aiming to craft a new IP and produce films and games in that IP as a phase one, Kojima says, “the second phase is to create works in which the boundary between games and movies is as ambiguous as possible. For example, a game where people watching the screen from behind while playing the game will mistake it for a movie. By using the same assets and creators as the movie, we are planning to create such a work.”

While Kojima further explains phase three of Kojima Productions will be to “create a new form” that is both a film and video game, it appears there’s no medium Death Stranding will leave on the cutting room floor for maximum immersion into its universe.

The next title in the franchise, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach and the previously announced limited edition DualSense controller will launch on June 26.
