In an interview released Wednesday, BioWare’s Dragon Age: The Veilguard directors revealed a significant detail: Player decisions made in Dragon Age: Origins can still matter in the future.
While the internet appears divided on Dragon Age: The Veilguard—at least on Reddit and YouTube—new information is being shared by developers and key figures at BioWare regarding the franchise, particularly the first (and best-received) title. On Wednesday, IGN published an interview with BioWare Game Director Corrine Busche and Creative Director John Epler (who worked on The Veilguard), who shared a wealth of information about other titles in the series, including what could happen in future installments. (Spoiler alert: Dragon Age: The Veilguard spoilers follow, so fans who haven’t finished the game should look away.)

The BioWare director duo went into detail about The Veilguard‘s secret ending (which plays after the credits), showing past series antagonists and key players in the world of Thedas. Loghain, Meredith, Orsino, Bertrand, Corypheus, and Flemeth appear in the sequence, and the directors insist that was by design.
Busche said, “The big thing for us is we wanted to make this story, every single choice you make, feel relevant to it. One thing that we could have stated more clearly, or maybe alluded to more clearly in the game, is the idea that just because these choices from the past library of games didn’t necessarily impact this particular story, that doesn’t mean they’re gone.
“This is a chance for us to really key in on what matters with these events and what’s happening in Northern Thedas. I do fully expect that these choices, going clear back to Dragon Age: Origins, will again matter. So just wanted to be on record with that. Every one of your choices that people have made throughout their Dragon Age journey, those are still your choices.”

Busche concluded, “If you’ve seen the 2D ending we talked about, some of these events being quite pertinent, it’s easy to see how those choices can and will be relevant in the future,” referring to all of the major events that have led up to the secret ending. It appears BioWare plans to utilize storylines and decisions made from titles prior to The Veilguard in future Dragon Age installments, if they come to fruition.
The interview arrives on the heels of what BioWare and fans have coined Dragon Age Day, a page on the Electronic Arts website designed to celebrate fan art, fan fiction set in Thedas, and everything in between. This year, EA also launched a standalone Veilguard character creator that fans can use to create and share their designs online with other community members.
Fans looking to jump into the celebration can visit the page deployed by EA for more information, and a look at all of the creations fans have poured their hard work into over the years.
