Hot on the heels of last year’s remake of Dragon Quest 3, the reimagined Dragon Quest I & II are just over a month away, and it sounds like there might be a big surprise waiting.
In a group interview at Gamescom, as reported by GamesRadar, producer Masaaki Hayasaka talked about the immense amount of work that’s gone into these remakes. Interestingly, that includes what Hayasaka says is a “really big surprise” twist, that even veterans of the series won’t be expecting.
“We want to surprise and delight all Dragon Quest fans out there. Of course, together myself and original creator Mr. [Yuji] Horri really discussed this in depth, because we want to create that surprise, that new twist.”
On top of that, Hayasaka says the scenario for the two games has been significantly fleshed out and enhanced, to a pretty drastic degree. He says, “The original version – were tens of thousands of words on their own. We’re up into the millions now for the remake.”
That’s all pretty ambiguous, so it’s impossible to say what the new twist might be, but it’s interesting to think about. Despite being the first two games, chronologically Dragon Quest I & II take place after the third game. The previous remake introduced new story elements around Erdrick’s father, so it’s possible DQ I&II could have new elements revolving around Erdrick. To go along with that, Horri has previously teased, as reported by Automaton, that playing the trilogy in “chronological” order will lead to new discoveries.
The series at large is pretty well known for twists as well, like the notorious one that takes place halfway through Dragon Quest XI and quite literally changes the world.
Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake releases on October 30 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
