Last week, The Game Awards 2024 celebration revealed FromSoftware has a new title in development called Elden Ring Nightreign, which will not be a live service and has three-player co-op.
Since The Game Awards 2024 ceremony, fans have been looking high and low for more information surrounding any of the big reveals of the night. In an interview with IGN, FromSoftware Game Director Junya Ishizaki has revealed a few details surrounding their upcoming title revealed at TGA 2024, Elden Ring Nightreign, and in that interview, he answered fans’ prayers by sharing the title will not be a live service game.

Director Ishizaki said “we want to be clear that Nightreign is not like a live service game. Once you you buy Nightreign you get the complete package, everything is unlockable out of the gate. So we want it to be clear that this is what we wanted to make. It’s not intended as a live service game,” emphasizing that all in-game content can be unlocked with the base purchase. However, Ishizaki stopped short of stating that Elden Ring: Nightreign will not have microtransactions. It’s worth noting that FromSoftware has a track record of not implementing microtransactions in any of its mainline titles, starting with Dark Souls in 2011.
Elden Ring: Nightreign has also been confirmed as a spin-off of Elden Ring, and not a direct sequel. Ishizaki explained, “We’d like fans to think of Nightreign as an Elden Ring spin-off, first and foremost. The story is completely separate and parallel to the world of Elden Ring. If you had to tie it in some way, consider the events of the Shattering in the original game—this is a completely separate branch of the Elden Ring story,” confirming that George R.R. Martin, who helped construct the story of Elden Ring, has had no involvement with the spin-off.

Lastly, Director Ishizaki confirmed that Elden Ring: Nightreign can be played solo or with a party of three players, noting that the game “is designed” to be a three-player title. While Ishizaki provided fans with a wealth of information about the upcoming FromSoftware title, he stopped short of offering a specific release window beyond “2025.” Fans will have to wait until FromSoftware reveals more about the upcoming return to The Lands Between.
