EVE Online & CCP Games' New Collab Partners With MMOS To Aid Cancer Research

Today, CCP Games, in collaboration with Massively Multiplayer Online Science (MMOS), launched Project Discovery: Phase Four in EVE Online; the update allows players to actively participate in cancer and immune system research through game contribution.

The next stage of the groundbreaking citizen science initiative, Project Discovery, has finally hit Project Discovery: Phase Four in EVE Online. Phase four expands Project Discovery’s research focus to encompass critical immune system diseases. But first off, Project Discovery is an initiative (doubling as a unique mini-game) that is quick, easy, and rewarding to play. The initiative’s side benefit allows players to advance real science. Project Discovery was founded back in 2020, and its Flow Cytometry technique was introduced then to accelerate COVID-19 research.

Announced at EVEFanfest in 2023, phase four of Project Discovery focuses on a new subject: cancer research. Players will contribute to understanding critical immune system diseases, including cancer, through the similar use of flow cytometry simulators (from the first three phases) but an updated version of that mini-game. Since 2020, EVE Online, CCP Games and MMOS have reported that “over 900,000 EVE Online players have made massive contributions to scientific research, and over 500 million citizen science games have been completed. The player-generated data has also assisted in developing two high-performing AI models.”

EVE Online’s Creative Director, Bergur Finnbogason, said, “Project Discovery’s fourth phase marks a major milestone for citizen science by contributing to the cure for one of the world’s most deadly diseases,” including “The EVE community has a proven track record of helping scientists advance research for important causes. We are calling gamers from all walks of life to join our capsuleers in the fight against cancer” regarding the new phase of Project Discovery.

Fans who want to check out all of the details, including what experts have said regarding the initiative, can head to the official EVE Online blog post for all of the details. Project Discovery: Phase Four is live now, so fans can dive back into EVE Online to support cancer research.
