Fede Álvarez To Produce Next Texas Chainsaw Massacre

Word is going around that Fede Álvarez will be producing the next Texas Chainsaw Massacre for Kim Henkel and Legendary Pictures.

This story comes from Bloody Disgusting, who has previously reported that Legendary Pictures was in the mix to not only develop new films based on Tobe Hooper‘s original slasher masterpiece The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, but also a television series. They also heard that before the October 2017 release of Leatherface, the rights had turned back over to Kim Henkel, writer and producer on the 1974 slasher classic and also director of Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation (1994).

Apparently, not only has Legendary closed the deal, but Fede Álvarez (Evil Dead, Don’t Breathe) is producing for Henkel and Legendary. That would mean that Álvarez is currently seeking a director for the project.

While plans aren’t set in stone, the dream team’s apparent intent is to make a direct sequel to Hooper’s ’74 film, similar to what Blumhouse and Universal have done with Halloween. Unfortunately, Texas Chainsaw Massacre’s female lead Marilyn Burns passed away in 2014. It will be interesting to see how they continue the story without her, although it could just focus on the current state of the monstrous Sawyer family.

At any rate, it sounds like a new Texas Chainsaw Massacre is currently in the team-gathering stages with a solid producing base ready to go. It’s not exactly the best-known horror franchise these days, but it’s undoubtedly a classic, and it’s always welcome at the slasher table. We’ll update you with new information when it arrives.
