On Thursday, it has been revealed that work on the Final Fantasy 7 Remake‘s third and final instalment is already underway, and it won’t be next-gen exclusive.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has finally launched for PC and to commemorate the occasion, series producer Yoshinori Kitase and series director Naoki Hamaguchi revealed information about the next instalment in a joint interview with 4Gamer (loosely translated by Google Translate). It appears that fan’s fears of the next title being next-gen exclusive are unfounded, as the series producer has confirmed the title will land on the current PS5 generation of PlayStation consoles as well as a potential successor.

Due to the length of development time it took for the first two parts of Final Fantasy 7 Remake to launch, fans have been wary that the next instalment would be a next-gen exclusive. So, the interviewer from 4Gamer asked “Those who have played Final Fantasy 7 Remake on PS4 and FF7 Rebirth on PS5, I think there may be some concern that the third work will be for the next generation console,” to which Yoshinori Kitase replied “No, you can rest assured about the next one,” meaning the title will be available for the current gen as well.
Kitase also recognized the importance of having the Final Fantasy series multi-platform, saying “it is true that the trend in the world is that the benefits of limiting the platform on which you play games to a specific hardware are no longer the only big thing. In fact, there are more and more SIE titles being released not only for PlayStation 5 but also for PC,” continuing with “the company has announced that it will steer toward multi-platform development” and concluding by saying “I personally believe that it is inevitable that the consumer and PC versions will be released at the same time, or that both will be released as close together as possible.”

Lastly, the team of Hamaguchi and Kitase revealed that the third (and final) instalment of Final Fantasy 7 Remake has already been in production for nine months, so development is well underway for the finale.
