Rumour: 2 Final Fantasy Remakes Are Still in Development

On Friday, a fresh wave of Final Fantasy remake rumours hit the internet and two fan-favourite entries are alleged to receive the treatment.

According to a known leaker, previously rumoured Final Fantasy remakes are still in “active development.” Last week, known X (formerly Twitter) leaker NatetheHate2 went into the replies section on their X account to release more information about officially unannounced projects. The account rose gained prominence last month for accurately predicting a Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater trailer release during a then-unannounced PlayStation State of Play that just aired this week. The full rumour regarding Final Fantasy remakes can be seen below in an X thread exchange.

The account responds, “Both remain in active development. FFIXR isn’t expected to see release in 2025” to a request for information regarding the previously rumoured Final Fantasy remake projects. The titles mentioned in the post are an officially unconfirmed Final Fantasy IX remake and a Final Fantasy Tactics remake. Further down the thread, another user, guildensternVS says that it has been a “very long time for a Remaster,” to which the NatetheHate2 account responds “Just because I haven’t heard it… doesn’t mean it’s not coming this year, to be clear. I simply don’t have a timeline of release on the game at the moment.”

Rumour: 2 Final Fantasy Remakes Are Still In Development

The last update fans received regarding a Final Fantasy Tactics remake came from a 2023 interview with game director Yasumi Matsuno, who helped design the original 1997 game. Surprisingly, the latest confirmation also comes from X, where Matsuno responded to fans‘ burning questions.

When a fan asked if the development team would add a progression system to the Ultima spell, Matsuno replied: “Currently, there are no plans for remastering. Also, you have to convey your request to SQEX, not me. Thank you for your understanding.”

Matsuno continued denying the existence of a Tactics remake in a later reply: “I’m very sorry. That’s all I can say as my position right now. I’ll leave it to you whether you believe it or not. Thank you.” This ultimately leaves it up to fans whether to believe the remake (or remaster) exists.

It’s important to note that no matter how credible a rumour seems, it should be taken with a grain of salt until a formal announcement is made. So far, nothing official has confirmed the existence of a Final Fantasy IX or Final Fantasy Tactics remake, so fans should hold out hope until confirmation arrives.
