The Game Awards 2025: GOTY Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Says "Thank You" With Free Update

Nominated a record-breaking 12 times, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was the big winner of the 2025 Game Awards, and to express their gratitude for all the support they’ve received this year, Sandfall Interactive has shadow-dropped a free “Thank You” Update for all players.

Director Guillame Broche announced the previously-teased update during his acceptance speech Thursday night, after thanking Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi for inspiring them, the makers of YouTube game-making tutorials, and the players—for their support, their fan creations, and their “endless arguing about which ending is the good one.”

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33‘s “Thank You” update looks to be a true celebration, judging by the colourful and unique tone of a new trailer. Accessible from Act III, the new content features an additional playable environment born of Verso’s Drafts, full of balloons, fairy tale structures, and whimsical monster variants. With the new location comes more music from composer Lorien Testard, who was also among the game’s winners tonight for his work on the instant-classic soundtrack, and new outfits for each playable character, like a classy tuxedo and top hat for Maelle.

The update isn’t all fun and games, either. Savvy players can take on new challenges in the Endless Tower, utilizing new weapons and Luminas to further expand their strategy. Or if you want to embrace your artistic side, a new Photo Mode has been added, accessible through the pause menu with a wide array of options.

Expedition 33 has received a host of quality-of-life improvements and bug fixes in the process, and is now certified on Steam Deck and the ROG Xbox Ally. Amongst the tweaks are improvements to the UI, a large expansion of the total Luminas sets available, and localizations for 7 additional languages (bringing the total to 19).

The free update is a touching show of gratitude for a tremendous outpouring of support from all sides of the industry. Since its launch in April, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has been a tremendous success story—even catching recognition from the president of France—and a clear frontrunner for any game awards this year.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and its free “Thank You” update are available now on PlayStation 5, PC, and Xbox Series X|S.
