Hearthstone reveals more cards fresh from Dr. Boom's lab.

Hearthstone: The Boomsday Project Explodes With New Mechs

Hearthstone just had a Hearthside Chat explaining how the new Magnetic keyword works with Mechs in The BoomsDay Project.

Magnetic is a new keyword found in some of the Mechs in Hearthstone’s upcoming expansion. These minions can either be infused with other Mechs, and the targeted Mech will gain the minion’s attack, health, and other abilities.

These Magnetic minions play with the idea of how magnets work as well. That is, it matters which side players place a Magnetic minion on, as placing it to the left of a Mech combines both cards, while placing it on the right of a Mech allows you to play the minion ‘on its own,’ giving players more flexibility.

The creative process behind The Boomsday Project was also shared with players. Blizzard initially wanted to celebrate Mechs, but didn’t want something to clash with Goblins Vs Gnomes. The first idea was having Mechs that could be plugged into each other and played using the Modular mechanic with different types of implementations tried out.

One of these was a Choose One type of effect, where players can either play the Mech as a minion or attack it as a buff. In the end, however, the design felt too clunky. Later, the team had the idea of making the Mechs stick on the board. From there, The BoomsDay Project went on its way.

This expansion also focuses on three classes, namely Hunter, Paladin, and Warrior, as Magnetic minions can be found in these classes in addition to being found as neutral cards.

Hearthstone then showed off a few cards, the first one being Wargear, a 5 mana 5/5 neutral Mech with Magnetic. Up next was the 2 mana 1/5 Upgradable FrameBot Mech, which is a neutral minion that can be followed up with a Magnetic upgrade.

Next was Beryllium Nullifier, a 7 mana 3/8 with Mech with Magnetic that cannot be targeted by spells or hero powers. This card could either be fused onto an existing Mech, or even played to set up for a future upgrade.

Finally, Zilliax is Dr. Boom’s personal bodyguard, and a 5 mana 3/2 Legendary Mech with Magnetic, Divine Shield, Taunt, Lifesteal, and Rush. Infuse with a minion on an already upgraded Mech can very well mean catastrophe for the opponent.

More cards will be revealed as The Boomsday Project gets closer and closer. The Hearthstone reveal livestream will be on July 23 at 1 p.m. ET.
