Huawei Reveals its P40 Line of Flagship Phones

Huawei’s annual P-Series is getting an upgrade as the company revealed its upcoming P40, P40 Pro and P40 Pro+ smartphones.

Moving past the P30 line released in 2019, the newest iterations are geared towards photography this time around with an improved 1/1.28-inch sensor and 10x optical zoom. A larger pixel size also keeps pictures sharp when taken from long-range modes.

Its three cameras fit in both versions of the P40 in its Pro and Pro+ forms. Each also sports a 90Hz display over a quad curve display running with a 19.8 : 9 aspect ratio. Unlike last year’s P30 Pro, the newer P40 Pro+ model ups the resolution from its 6.47-inch 2340×1080 FHD+ display to a whopping 6.58 Flex OLED at 2640×1200 resolution. Both new phones will also run at a smooth 90Hz.

Interestingly, the P40 Pro will come with a fourth ToF camera for increased depth perception in long to mid range pictures. The Pro+ has a fifth additional lens for 10x Optical Telephoto zoom alongside the 3x option.

The base P40 smartphone also comes with similar upgrades under a 6.1-inch display. While its battery runs at an all-day standard of 3800mAH, the Pro and Pro+ will come with a much bigger 4200 mAH capacity.

The phones will also be protected with an IP68 waterproof rating allowing photographers to grab underwater footage. Its ultra wide video camera has been upgraded to support 3:2 aspect ratios while capturing up to 7680fps in slow motion video. Three all-direction microphones on the top, bottom and rear camera let users take in full surround sound and different voices with clarity.

A release also states the P40 integrates 5G connections through its Kirin 990 chip while Wi-fi 6 Plus technology lets users transmit data up to 2,400Mbps on optimal internet.

All P40 phones will come with Android 10.0 EMUI OS and its first-party MeeTime video chat service, online Huawei Vision TV streaming services and the updated AppGallery as the company’s own platform for downloading software.

The base P40 and the P40 Pro come in five colors with a glossy-matte finish: Black, Deep Sea Blue, Ice White, Silver Frost and Blush Gold.

Meanwhile, the P40 Pro+ comes in a Ceramic Black or Ceramic White options at launch.

The P40 series will be hitting Canadian retailers early in June while more details on price and availability are coming in a few weeks.
