On Friday, Apple has announced that they are deploying a new update to Voice Memos for iPhone 16 Pro, in iOS 18.2 users can use layered recording.

Apple launched the voice memos utility application for consumers to deploy when needing to record small snippets of audio, or even entire interviews from the palm of your hand. The functionality of this app has been improved today with the iOS 18.2 update, which allows iPhone 16 Pro users to use layered recording straight from the app.

Layered recording allows users to layer vocal tracks on top of existing instrumental recordings without the need for headphones, and using this feature, iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max users will be able to play their original instrumental ideas through the built-in speaker while recording vocals. The iOS 18.2 update also allows users to send an instrumental music mix as a compressed audio file directly to Voice Memos from more professional applications like Logic Pro.

Layered recordings can then be synced across devices with Voice Memos on Mac (with a notable toggle that lets it sync automatically). This streamlines editing further by letting the user drag and drop stuff in and out of voice memos to editing software like Logic. To showcase this functionality, three GRAMMY Award winners — Michael Bublé, country star Carly Pearce, and record producer Greg Wells — teamed up to bring their new track “Maybe This Christmas” to life with Voice Memos on iPhone 16 Pro. That track and video can be seen below.

Consumers, audiophiles and producers can deploy this functionality by installing the iOS 18.2 update on the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro MAX today. Consumers looking for more information can head over to the official Apple website for more on what’s been updated for the iPhone iOS version 18.2.
