Apple TV+’s new drama, Chief of War has been described as a passion project from the series’ creators, Jason Momoa and Thomas Pa’a Sibbett, and it follows the story of Ka’iana. Ka’iana is a Native Hawaiian warrior played by Momoa, and in the new teaser trailer, he can be seen dispensing justice as “the fist of the people” in the name of island unification. Set in the late 18th century and loosely based on a true story, the new drama series traces Ka’iana’s efforts to unite the Hawaiian islands ahead of Western colonization.

This isn’t the first time this week Jason Momoa has made headlines with his fists, as a viral moment happened over the weekend with the former Game of Thrones star entering a different kind of fray. Momoa could be seen (thanks to Graeme ONeil’s Channel) moshing during a particularly heavy section of Pantera’s performance at the prolific Back to the Beginning Black Sabbath farewell concert held in Birmingham, England. In both instances, Momoa can be seen uniting the people.

Aside from Momoa himself, the series stars predominantly Polynesian actors, with Luciane Buchanan, Temuera Morrison, Te Ao o Hinepehinga, Cliff Curtis, Kaina Makua, Moses Goods, Siua Ikaleo, Brandon Finn, James Udom, Mainei Kinimaka, Te Kohe Tuhaka and Benjamin Hoetjes rounding out the series casting. Jason Momoa himself is the co-creator alongside Thomas Pa’a Sibbett, serves as writer, producer and lead cast member in what he calls “a story rooted in my home, my culture, and my heart” in an Instagram post promoting the series.

Chief of War debuts exclusively on Apple TV+ on August 1.
