Magic: The Gathering – Tarkir Dragonstorm Unleashes its Fury!

Wizards of the Coast and Magic: The Gathering have unveiled the next wave of information surrounding the upcoming Universes Within set, Tarkir Dragonstorm.

As fans move further into 2025, Wizards of the Coast continues to generate excitement. While all eyes are on the upcoming Universes Beyond – Final Fantasy set, expected to launch in June 2025, Tarkir Dragonstorm will arrive first. Like every other set release, Tarkir Dragonstorm introduces new and returning keywords and mechanics alongside fresh and familiar cards from Magic: The Gathering and the Plane of Tarkir. As always, a variety of new artwork and treatments exclusive to Tarkir Dragonstorm will give players the feeling of carrying personal galleries in their pockets.

Magic: the Gathering: New & Returning Mechanics in Tarkir Dragonstorm

Omen – This new mechanic in Magic: the Gathering takes inspiration from Wilds of Eldraine‘s Adventure mechanic. When a player uses the Omen side, the card is then shuffled into the player’s library instead of exiled to be played later. Basically two-cards-in-one, instead of the adventure’s play this, then this.

Endures X: Whenever another non-token creature dies,  put X +1/+1 counters on the creature that endures, or create an X/X white spirit creature token.

Flurry: Whenever you cast your second spell each turn, this effect happens.

Mobilize X: Whenever this creature attacks, create X tapped attacking 1/1 red warrior creature tokens. Sacrifice them at the beginning of the next end step.

Renew: Pay X, then Exile this card from your graveyard: Put a [Keyword] counter (as many as the creature has) on target creature. Activate only as a sorcery.

Harmonize: You may cast thus card from your graveyard for its harmonize cost. You may tap a creature you control to reduce that cost by X (which is the tapped creature’s power), and like flashback, the Harmonize card exiles.

Behold a [Dragon]: to behold, you designate a [Dragon] you control, or reveal one in hand. If you do, create a treasure token (Behold isn’t specific to just dragon creatures).

Returning characters include Anafenza, who gets a new card, Anafenza, Unyielding Liege, and Sidisi, who returns with Sidisi, Regent of the Mire. Though Craterhoof Behemoth is not native to Tarkir, this fan-favourite creature will also return in Tarkir Dragonstorm as part of the special artwork reprint treatments.

Siege Enchantments make a return in Tarkir Dragonstorm, with five available in this set. These cards feature multiple modes. For example, Frostcliff Siege can be played in either its Temur or Jeskai mode (both featuring red and blue, present in each three-colour clan). Players must choose one mode upon casting, offering versatility for different gameplay situations. Sieges were popular in Fate Reforged and return with this new twist.

A new cycle of Sagas will also be available, with only the Jeskai version revealed so far. Rediscover the Way allows players to draw an extra card during the first two turns it is in play. Each Tarkir clan will have a Saga representing its colour identity when the full set releases. These Sagas explore the relationship between the Dragons and Khans of Tarkir, adding depth to the lore of once-mortal enemies.

MTG Tarkir Dragonstorm – Special Card Treatments & Where To Find Them!

Like previous MTG sets, Tarkir Dragonstorm features a variety of specialized card treatments. The showcase treatment this time is called Draconic, with a specialized border showcasing draconic fury.
