The Nintendo Switch Online service is home to many retro games offered to subscribers, and now subscribers can play Mario Paint with mouse controls.

The Super Nintendo Entertainment System classic Mario Paint has finally returned to the Nintendo platform after a 33-year hiatus. The original release promoted artistic creativity with a Super Mario flair, and it has not been playable in any (legal) capacity since the 1992 release on the SNES.

The original release promoted the usage of the mouse as a controller, and let players plug-and-play a mouse to let creativity take the wheel. Now, with the Nintendo Switch 2‘s joy-con mouse functionality, it’s the perfect opportunity for Mario Paint to return. A trailer has been included with the title’s surprise drop on the Nintendo Switch Online service, and it can be seen below.

One of the main selling points of the Nintendo Switch 2 is mouse functionality, but even if players don’t own a Nintendo Switch 2, Mario Paint still allows previous-generation console players to open their canvas with mouse controls. Mario Paint lets original Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch OLED players plug a mouse into their console dock and play as the original intended, without the need to pick up a Switch 2.

Nintendo’s official announcement reads, “Connect a compatible USB mouse (sold separately) to play the game on your Nintendo Switch system. If you’re playing on a Nintendo Switch 2 system, you can use the Joy-Con 2 controller like a mouse and let your imagination run wild,” in their inclusion of former console owners in the Mario Paint party.

The Nintendo Switch Online subscription service includes the ability to play a catalogue of vintage Nintendo titles for a monthly subscription fee. Fans who need more information on the subscription model can check out the official site.
