Today, it has been reported that streaming service giant Netflix will stop allowing fans with older Apple TV models access to their platform this Summer.
After many new announcements this 2024, with a Minecraft animated series and Arcane returning for season two, Netflix has made a confusing decision to “sunset” support for older Apple TV models. This was first reported by users who flocked to the forum site Reddit, who posted screenshots of the notice sent out by Netflix, and these notices were distributed via email. Notably, only users who have connected their accounts to one of these devices in the past have received the email.

After briefly mentioning which devices will be affected (the Apple TV generation 2 and generation 3), Netflix says “Unfortunately, we’re sunsetting support for these devices on Jul 31, 2024. We know this can be frustrating, but we’re doing this to ensure you maintain the best possible Netflix viewing experience.” The Apple TV Gen 2 and Gen 3 were released in 2010 and 2012 respectively, and these models of Apple TV interestingly came with applications preinstalled on them without the ability to access a storefront. Thankfully, it has been confirmed the newer 4K models of Apple TV will be uneffected by the sunsetting.

Consumers on Reddit have expressed their disappointment, with user maraculous saying “This is very dumb, since my Apple TV still works incredibly well.” This isn’t the first time support has ended for applications on older devices, as even YouTube ended support for the Nintendo 3DS in September of 2019, and many others — including CBS All-Access ending support for their own app in 2021 for older Apple TV models, then reported by The Verge — have also done this in the past.
Fans can head to Reddit to read the rest of the conversation and be a part of it. Netflix is ending support for Apple TV Gen 2 & 3 on July 31, 2024.
