In a move that shocked the world, Nintendo, somewhat unceremoniously dropped a trailer showing off its Nintendo Switch successor.
Announced early on Jan. 16, Nintendo provided a first look at the Nintendo Switch 2 in a video introducing the hardware, seemingly confirming many of the rumours surrounding the system. The Nintendo Switch 2 will not only feature a larger screen and a stable-hinged kickstand but will also include the long-anticipated snap-in Joy-Cons, which are reportedly connected magnetically rather than with the traditional plastic locking mechanism.
The trailer also featured the new Joy-Cons with much more articulated buttons, depressing further than the standard Joy-Con buttons, and seemingly more versatile sticks. However, while the presence of a mysterious second button under the Home button was there, Nintendo still hasn’t given any indication to its function.

The trailer also revealed that the Nintendo Switch 2 will play Nintendo Switch 2-exclusive games, as well as both physical and digital Nintendo Switch games—within the trailer, players got a first glimpse of what looks like a new Mario Kart. However, certain Nintendo Switch games may not be supported on or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2. Whether this means the Nintendo Switch 2 will have new features—or remove some redundancies—is still unknown. Details will be shared on the Nintendo website at a later date.
Nintendo Switch 2, the successor to the Nintendo Switch system, will be released in 2025. A Nintendo Direct focused on the console is planned for Wednesday, April 2, 2025.
