After the Nintendo Direct yesterday, the Nintendo Switch 2 website is open for business, and it details some compatibility issues the successor has with the original Switch software.
Before yesterday’s Nintendo Direct, in November 2024, Nintendo had revealed that their planned successor console, the Nintendo Switch 2, would be backwards compatible with the original Switch software. At the time, Nintendo had confirmed basic backwards compatibility with the original Switch and confirmed Nintendo Switch Online would be coming to the Switch 2, but didn’t detail how far that backwards compatibility would reach.
Shortly after the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, Nintendo uncorked a list of over 100 titles that won’t work as intended at the launch of the successor console. While Joy-Cons for the original Switch have been confirmed to work on the Switch 2, not all software will. Titles that can work on the Switch 2, but only with original Joy-Cons are as follows: Ring Fit Adventure, 1-2-Switch, Everybody 1-2-Switch!, Game Builder Garage, Nintendo Switch Sports, WarioWare: Move It!, and Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 1-3 kits.
Nintendo is currently working its way through the Nintendo Switch library, conducting limited testing with each game to see ‘how compatible’ it is for the Switch 2. While not all games will be compatible, the list below is the confirmed titles that have “start-up issues” on the Switch 2.

Nintendo has detailed that they’re actively testing Nintendo Switch games to determine further issues with compatibility, so it’s possible this list could increase. The Nintendo Switch 2 notably announced Nintendo Switch 2 Edition titles (which act as upscaled versions of previous Switch titles) that include extra features not available on original hardware.
[UPDATE: May 28]: More Nintendo Switch 2 Software With Issues Has Been Revealed
The previous information provided by Nintendo was incomplete. Nintendo has said that they will be “actively testing” Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 games to determine issues with compatibility before launch, and now that the Switch 2 is one week away from take-off, Nintendo has revealed more titles that will have issues on the Switch 2.
The lists above have been updated as of May 27, giving fans further warnings on compatibility for when the Nintendo Switch 2 launches. It’s worth mentioning some titles like Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes have been added to the “games with issues that are planned to be addressed by launch or shortly after” list, so Nintendo’s working on it.
For more information, fans can visit the official Nintendo Switch 2 website. The Nintendo Switch 2 launches on June 5.
