Nintendo Switch 2 launch day has arrived and as consumers have arrived home with their new console some have reported receipt staples destroying the screen.
After the launch day patch was deployed on Wednesday, the Nintendo Switch 2 was off to a smooth launch day with no problems, until launch day. As the Nintendo Switch 2 console starts becoming available to the general public today, some adopters have noticed issues with their console after unboxing. Namely, customers have opened their console to find it has screen damage due to staff stapling receipts to boxes. The staple would reportedly go through the front of the Switch 2 packing material, and damage the screen underneath.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) a user described their experience waiting in line at a midnight console release from a GameStop location in NYC. The user wrote in their post “GameStop stapled the receipt for me and my friends Switch 2s to the box. FML” which was followed up by photos of the console and staple placement on the packaging. “Genuinely insane now I’m gonna have to wait 3 months for the restock” he added in a thread with pictures of the damage. The damage on each console whose picture has been shared with the same issue has the same staple vampire bite to the screen.
Other users have reported similar happenings over on Reddit, where other customers have posted receipts from a GameStop in Staten Island, New York, and complained about the same issue. While the post has since been flagged for including employee identifiers, commenters have responded with similar issues that have occurred at the same location. One user commented on the same thread “It’s seeming like everyone there had the same thing done to their boxes as well. Over 100 people were there tonight.”

Since reports have started surfacing regarding Nintendo Switch 2 screen stapling, GameStop has yet to respond to the issue, and their last post on X regarding the Nintendo Switch 2 says “Midnight. GameStop. You know the drill” followed by an advertisement that says “Tonight’s the night.” Other users have reported better experiences overall when shopping for the Switch 2, with one user claiming also on X that Walmart included snacks with their order. Quinn Nelson took to X to write “Walmart delivered our other Switch 2 this morning with a free can of Pringles and a Coke. Unexpectedly awesome!”
While reports are continuing to roll out regarding the Switch 2 launch, it remains to be seen how negatively affected customers will be made whole considering stores already have “out of stock” signs waiting for the inevitable.
