Nintendo Comments on Recent Switch 2 Leak, Says It Isn't "Official"

Nintendo has finally broken its silence on a major Switch 2 leak from earlier this week, that appeared out of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). A peripheral company called Genki showed-off mockups for the new system, and potential accessories.

Nintendo has now told Japanese Newspaper Sankei Shimbun (and translated by Automaton) that any images and videos from CES are “not official.” On top of that a spokesperson confirmed with CNET Japan (Again translated by Automaton) that no gaming hardware was actually provided to Genki, saying “The gaming hardware that Genki claims to be Nintendo hardware at CES is official and was not provided to the company by Nintendo.”

There’s been a lot of misinformation surrounding the mock-ups shown off by Genki, with some reports saying the company had stated it had already gotten hands-on with the system. But now, in an interview with GameSpark Genki has said the same thing, that the products seen at CES were based on leaked information from the industry. You can see an image of the mock-up below, provided by GameSpark.

Now that doesn’t necessarily mean that what we’ve seen doesn’t represent what the Switch 2 actually is, it just means nothing was officially given by Nintendo itself. But even still, like with all leaks, anything seen should be given a fair dose of skepticism.

We still don’t know when the Switch 2 will get announced in any official capacity. Nintendo has confirmed the existence of its next system, and it will have a reveal by the end of the financial year, which would be June. That’s a six-month span of time, however, with really no idea where the reveal could fall.

At the same time, whenever the reveal happens means that the Switch 2’s release date is likely months after. The original Switch took five months to release after its reveal, with the reveal happening in October 2016 and the console releasing in March 2017.

The only thing we really know currently, is that the Switch 2 will be backward compatible with the original system.
